University of Detroit Jesuit plans to purchase former recreation center [email protected] Wed, 04/03/2019 - 16:55

The University of Detroit Jesuit High School plans to purchase a long-vacant former recreation center on the City’s west side and will enter into a community benefits agreement with residents in the neighborhood.

Johnson Recreation Center in the Pembroke neighborhood, empty since 2006, will be completely renovated by the private high school pending its $625,000 purchase. The City of Detroit, which owns the facility, closed Johnson Rec during a mass closure of recreation centers between 2006 and 2013.

Do you hate the Livernois island? Talk to the mayor about it [email protected] Wed, 08/15/2018 - 14:55

A community meeting will be held on August 16 for residents in and around Livernois-McNichols to discuss proposed streetscape improvements to the area.

Top of the agenda for residents? A chance to sound off on the long-debated median along Livernois Avenue, which has been a source of back-and-forth for Detroiters for years. The City of Detroit Planning Department is looking to take feedback on possibly removing the median completely and instead widening the street or widening the sidewalk.

Our very own Baker’s Keyboard Lounge got a little love on “Jeopardy” Monday night.

During the first night of the long-running game show’s Tournament of Champions, in which past winners are invited back for another showdown, the northwest Detroit jazz club (featured in our District 2 video on The Neighborhoods, of course) was the subject of a $600 tile in the category “Americana.” It was the second question of the night.
