Detroit’s black trans women are launching a new comedic webseries

The stories of one of Detroit’s most marginalized communities are about to be amplified in a big way.

Ahya Simone is the creator of Femme Queen Chronicles (FQC), a fictional webseries following the lives of four black trans women in Detroit. She says the idea for series first started as a means of “creating something fun and comedic just to combat some of the stories around trans women of color in Detroit and the large amount of murders (of trans women) that have happened.”

Jerk X Jollof brings taste of African and Caribbean culture to Detroit and beyond

It's a sweaty, fast-paced frenzy of sound, smell and taste: a Nigerian flag waves frantically through the air, pulled by a young woman wining up to Maleek Berry’s hit song “Kontrol.” Colorfully patterned West African-inspired clothing dots the pulsing crowd. The song shifts to something faster: “Scene” by GBM Nutron. The sweet sound of Soca brings the dance floor to life, and the temperature reflects it. My glasses begin to fog, my legs ache from dancing, and my lips still tingle from the suya I ate earlier.
