Your grandaddy was riding scooters in Black Bottom
Anybody know whose grandfather that is circled in the photo above? He was clearly ahead of his time. A trendsetter. A visionary. Ugh, his mind!
You might notice that ol’ boy is riding a scooter, and that the photo is dated August 31, 1949. The photo was taken in the Black Bottom neighborhood by the City of Detroit — hey, that’s us! — just prior to the neighborhood’s destruction via eminent domain.
Discussion on future Lafayette Park development to be held August 21
A community meeting will be held on August 21 for residents in and around Lafayette Park to discuss the City’s community benefits ordinance regarding development in the area.
The meeting is hosted by the City of Detroit’s Planning and Development Department for more information on the Shapero Hall site. Per plans from developer Armin Irving, the old Shapero Hall will be torn down and replaced with a new residential high-rise.

A community meeting will be held on July 10 for residents in and around Lafayette Park to discuss improvements to the area.
The meeting is hosted by the City of Detroit’s Planning and Development Department and will gather resident feedback on Lafayette West, a proposed development on the site of the old Shapero Hall.
The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Horatio Williams Foundation at 1010 Antietam St.

Della Reese, daughter of Detroit's Black Bottom, dies at 86
Della Reese, the pioneering entertainer who rose from impoverished beginnings in Detroit’s Black Bottom neighborhood to one of the screen’s most beloved “aunties” in black entertainment, has died, according to reports. She was 86.
