#DetroitLove: Kija and Bomani

We are back for a third year highlighting #DetroitLove! We put out the call for couples to be featured in our annual Valentine's Day series and they answered. First up...Bomani and Kija.

“Bomani and I have been married for 22 years and have lived in the same eastside community, District 4, for the last two decades. We met at the Shrine of the Black Madonna (where the couple was photographed) back in 1996, and we've been hanging tough since then.

PHOTO GALLERY: Sheffield Brings Jeezy to Occupy the Corner

Detroit councilwoman Mary Sheffield partnered with Atlanta-based musical artist Jeezy for the latest Occupy the Corner Pop Up on Monday, August 26. Sheffield’s pop-up provided free food, free haircuts and braiding, bounce houses and performances for kids to enjoy at Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center Field in the city’s Virginia Park neighborhood. Both Sheffield and Jeezy personally passed out free book bags. This was Sheffield’s second Occupy the Corner in two weeks. Check out our recap below.

Four future projects Detroiters can expect around 12th and Clairmount

If one were to go through a list of the most notable of intersections in Detroit — Mack and Bewick, Dexter and Davison, Seven Mile and Gratiot among them — then 12th and Clairmount might be at the top. Detroiters know it’s the historic site where the 1967 rebellion broke out, but for those living there — especially those still living there long after the last tank left — it’s home.
