New site lets you see every payment the City of Detroit makes to vendors, and how much the City pays
Open Checkbook Detroit part of executive order for transparency
Detroiters can now see every payment the City of Detroit has made to a vendor through a new open data portal.
As part of an executive order signed by the mayor in February 2015 that encourages municipal transparency, the City has launched Open Checkbook Detroit, where users can browse city departments and agencies to see every invoice paid to contractors, other agencies, service providers and more.
The invoices shown begin with the 2017-18 fiscal year.
For example, if a user clicks on payments made by the Detroit Health Department, they’ll see that they’ve made payments as small as $32.5 (for Absopure water delivery) and as large as $6,654,806.82 (a contract with he Southeastern Michigan Health Association).
Users can also filter payments by department, category, cost center and expense. There’s also an Open Data Finance Glossary that defines terms used throughout the portal.
