Marie Kondo's guide to how trash pickup works in Detroit
The life-changing magic of not believing everything you see on the internet
Hello! I am Marie Kondo*. My mission is to spark joy in the world through tidying. And if you’re a Detroit resident, here’s how exactly tidying up your house works for you.
Despite what you may have seen in a screenshot on Facebook or what you heard from your cousin last night, weekly trash pickup in the city of Detroit will not change.
Your trash will be picked up every week just as it has been all this time. But there are additional changes coming for yard waste pickup, recycling pickup, and bulk pickup.
Here’s exactly what’s going on:
Before, yard waste pickup in Detroit began in May and ended in December. This year (and presumably every year going forward), yard waste pickup began in April, adding four more weeks of yard-waste pickup. Yard-waste pickup still ends in December, and it is still picked up biweekly, just as it always has been.
The amount of bulk trash you can put out has changed. Before, you could put out only one (1) cubic yard of bulk trash outside your house. Now, you can put out two (2) cubic yards of bulk trash. If it does not spark joy, thank the item for its service, but know that non-joy sparking items cannot exceed two cubic yards.
If you live on the east side of Detroit, then the day of the week that your trash is picked up does not change. If your trash is picked up on a Tuesday, then it’s still getting picked up on a Tuesday.
If you live in Southwest Detroit, then the day of the week that your trash is picked up does not change. If your trash is picked up on a Tuesday, then it’s still getting picked up on a Tuesday.
BUT IF YOU LIVE ON THE WEST SIDE OF DETROIT, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS SENTENCE RIGHT HERE. Starting on June 3, if you live on the west side of Detroit and you are serviced by Advanced Disposal, your trash pickup schedule will change. Before, regular trash pickup did not occur on the same day of the week as bulk, yard and recycling pickup. Now, bulk, yard and recycling pickup will be moved to the same day of the week, but still picked up biweekly just like everywhere else in the city. For example: If your regular trash pickup was on a Tuesday, but your bulk pickup was every other Thursday, the only change now is that your bulk trash will be picked up every other Tuesday. That’s it. That’s the only change.
