"District 5 is the epicenter of culture, education, business, entertainment and medicine." - Councilwoman Mary Sheffield
WE ARE TECH TOWN
Tech Town — an emerging knowledge district in Midtown Detroit — is Detroit's entrepreneurial hub. It was founded in 2000 by Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System and General Motors and then incorporated as a nonprofit four years later, establishing its headquarters in an Albert Kahn building. Originally founded to support tech-based spinoffs from the university, the nonprofit soon realized that its incubation and acceleration strategies for tech companies could help strengthen neighborhood small businesses and commercial corridors across Detroit. Developed by Sasaki Associates in collaboration with Midtown Detroit Inc. and U3 Ventures, the TechTown District Plan aims to spur innovation, promotes entrepreneurship and builds community in a vibrant, mixed-use setting.
